Chiropractic Awareness Week 2026
Understanding MSK Conditions and How Chiropractic Helps
By Leslie Budzynski DC ~ BCA Registered Chiropractor (BCA Reg. No. 0072) since 1987 & GCC Registered Chiropractor (GCC Reg. No. 00043) since 1999 | Bournemouth Chiropractic talks all about the annual Chiropractic Awareness Week and how we carry it through the year.
What is Chiropractic Awareness Week
This focused week gives us, as a profession, an opportunity to talk about something that affects millions of people across the UK, musculoskeletal health.
Here at our clinic, Bournemouth Chiropractic on Branksome Hill Road, we take part in this annual national campaign because we believe that understanding your MSK health is the first step toward generally raising awareness about the benefits of chiropractic.
While the campaign itself, like so many, runs for one week, our commitment to accessible chiropractic care runs throughout the year. Which is why we offer free 15-minute consultations to new patients , as part of our usual appointment system, not just in April.
What is MSK an Abbreviation for?
MSK stands for musculoskeletal, its a big word with a straightforward meaning. It means the complete system of our muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves that holds our body together and allows us to move. It is your physical support system.
Understandably, when any part of this MSK system is under stress, injured or not functioning as it should this will result in pain, stiffness, restricted movement or reduced coordination. Your body sends you a signal and that signal is pain. Your MSK health is the framework for your body and it’s best we take care of it for our whole lives.
Who Do MSK Conditions Affect?
As you can probably realise, MSK conditions are very common. According to the UK’s Versus Arthritis charity, musculoskeletal problems affect around 20 million people in this country, that is nearly one in three of the population. A staggering figure. Conditions range from familiar complaints like low back pain, neck pain, and shoulder problems to conditions like arthritis, sciatica and joint stiffness. Issues can be know to develop gradually over months and years and culminate in pain over a period of time.
What makes MSK health particularly important is that it affects far more than just your physical comfort. Persistent pain is awful and has far reaching consequences. It will cruelly limit your activity, disrupt sleeping probably result in affecting mood and in consequence, reducing quality of life significantly. Accepting pain and feeling it constantly is not acceptable.
MSK conditions are the leading culprits of disability in the UK and the impact of these painful conditions on daily life is often underestimated. Some people have been managing symptoms for so long they have come to accept them as normal and they think that that is just the way it is and they should feel like this for good. Change over time is gradual, pain beds in and becomes your new normal and that is quite sneaky.
Solutions are on offer. It is not the end of the road. Symptoms don’t have to be a burden, it is never too late to address things.

The Scale of the MSK Problem in the UK
The numbers are striking and slightly mind boggling. MSK conditions cost the UK economy an estimated 30 million working days each year, more than any other cause of workplace absence.
An NHS waiting list for MSK conditions currently averages around 11 weeks. This leaves people in pain for months before they are seen, during which time their condition can often worsen and become even harder to treat. The goal posts are slipping away over this time.
The WHO’s 2023 guidelines on managing chronic back pain placed nonsurgical, drug free approaches, including chiropractic care, at the centre of recommended treatment. This is consistent with the trusted UK clinical guidance. NICE Guideline NG59 which recommends manual therapy, including spinal manipulation, as a first line treatment option for low back pain. This is the same evidence based approach that forms the foundation of chiropractic practice, backed up by referenced and highly regarded documents.
A 2024 report by the British Chiropractic Association and York Health Economics Consortium found that integrating chiropractors more fully into NHS MSK pathways could deliver over 100,000 additional much needed appointments each year. It could reduce waiting times and generate approximately £400 million per year in productivity gains for the UK economy.
The evidence is clear that earlier access to chiropractic care produces better outcomes and lower long term costs.

The MSK Conditions We Treat Most Commonly
The wide range of conditions that respond well to chiropractic care is broader than many people think. The most common and well known conditions that are associated with seeing a chiropractor from all across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown and the wider Dorset area include things such as:
Low back pain is by far the most frequent reason people seek chiropractic care and it is one of the most thoroughly evidenced areas of chiropractic practice. Our comprehensive low back pain blog post fully explains what is actually happening in the spine during an episode of back pain and what treatment looks like in practice.
Neck pain and headaches are closely linked and often arise from the same common postural and mechanical factors. Cervicogenic headaches, that’s headaches that originate from the neck, are a common and under diagnosed complaint that responds particularly well to chiropractic care. Our post on how to get rid of a headache naturally covers the overlap between neck dysfunction and headache in more detail. It is worth a read.
Shoulder pain including rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder and referred pain from the cervical spine is another area where chiropractic assessment and treatment adds significant value. Read our detailed shoulder pain guide for a full breakdown of causes, lifestyle factors and treatment choices and solutions to pain.
Balance and falls risk are just awful and are increasingly recognised as MSK concerns. Poor joint mobility, reduced balance and muscle weakness all contribute to instability. All these contributing factors are addressable through chiropractic care. Our post on falls prevention in Bournemouth explores how chiropractic supports stability, particularly as we age.
Hip, pelvic, and leg pain including sciatica, sacroiliac joint problems and referred pain from the lumbar spine are all familiar conditions we assess and treat regularly at the clinic.
How Bournemouth Chiropractic Can Help
At Bournemouth Chiropractic, we take a whole body approach to musculoskeletal health.
Every new patient begins with a thorough assessment which includes a detailed history of symptoms, a physical and orthopaedic examination and a clear explanation of what we find and what we recommend. It is very important that you leave with a full grasp and understanding of your treatment plan.
Chiropractic treatment combines spinal manipulation or mobilisation, precise, controlled movements that restore joint function and reduce pain with soft tissue work targeting the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
When you are ready, we also prescribe tailored rehabilitation exercises and can provide practical advice on posture, sleep and lifestyle factors that affect recovery. It’s every bit of your life that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Care during Chiropractic Awareness Week
What does MSK mean and what conditions does it cover?
MSK stands for musculoskeletal, the system of muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves that supports movement and stability throughout the body. MSK conditions include back pain, neck pain, shoulder problems, sciatica, arthritis, joint stiffness and sports injuries among many others. They are the leading reason people seek chiropractic care.
How do I know if chiropractic can help my condition?
The most reliable way to find out is an assessment. Chiropractic is most effective for mechanical musculoskeletal problems meaning conditions that originate from the joints, muscles, discs or nerves of the spine and limbs, rather than from systemic disease. This covers the vast majority of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches that people experience. If during assessment we identify something outside our scope for example, a fracture, signs of infection or a red flag requiring urgent medical review we will refer you promptly and appropriately. We never treat conditions that we cannot responsibly help. You are in safe hands.
Is chiropractic available on the NHS?
Chiropractic is not routinely available on the NHS at present, though NICE guidelines recommend manual therapy, including spinal manipulation, as a first-line treatment for low back pain. Some NHS integrated care systems do commission chiropractic services and the BCA is actively working to expand this. In the meantime, private chiropractic care remains the most accessible route. At Bournemouth Chiropractic we offer a free 15-minute initial consultation so you can explore whether treatment is appropriate before committing to a course of care.
How quickly can I be seen at Bournemouth Chiropractic?
In most cases within 48 hours of calling and often sooner. This is one of the most significant advantages of private chiropractic care over the NHS MSK pathway, where average waiting times in the NHS are currently around 11 weeks. We are open Monday to Friday 8am–6pm and Saturday 8am–1pm. You can quickly and easily book a chiropractic appointment online or by calling 01202 937568.
What is the difference between a chiropractor, a physiotherapist, and an osteopath?
All three are regulated primary contact practitioners who assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions and you do not need a GP referral for any of them. The professions differ in their training philosophy, the techniques they use and their clinical approach. Chiropractors place particular emphasis on the relationship between spinal function and the nervous system and are known for spinal manipulation as a core treatment tool alongside rehabilitation and lifestyle advice. The best way to understand whether chiropractic is the right fit for your situation is a conversation with the practitioner, which is exactly what our free consultation is designed for, particularly highlighted during this week, Chiropractic Awareness Week.
