Your First Chiropractic Visit in Bournemouth
What to Expect and How to Prepare
If you have never visited a chiropractor before, it is completely normal to have a pile of questions and to feel a little apprehensive. I want every patient who comes to Bournemouth Chiropractic, my practice on Branksome Hill Road, to feel well informed, comfortable and confident in their choices from the moment they arrive.
This page walks you through exactly what happens at a first appointment, step by step. If you still have questions after reading it, our FAQs page covers the most common ones, or you are always welcome to call ahead for a quick chat.
“I want you, as a patient, to feel fully informed, confident and comfortable about seeing me for your first chiropractic visit. That matters to me every bit as much as it matters to you.”
Leslie Budzynski DC, on his goals for your first visit
Finding the Practice and What Happens When You Arrive
The practice is easy to find at 42 Branksome Hill Road, Bournemouth BH4 9LE, accessible from all directions including Westbourne, Branksome Park, Poole, Canford Cliffs and across the wider Dorset area, and there is plenty of free parking directly outside. Full directions and parking information are in our post about the practice on Branksome Hill Road.
Areas we cover
A first appointment can run up to an hour, so it helps to know you are not going to spend the end of it worrying about a parking meter. There is free parking on the driveway directly outside with no time limit and the clinic is on the ground floor with easy access from the car to the treatment room. Most first-visit patients come from within a few miles and the areas below are all a short drive or a bus ride along Branksome Wood Road and Glenferness Avenue.
First appointments are usually available within 48 hours, Monday to Saturday (7.30am to 6pm weekdays, 7.30am to 3pm Saturday). Book online or call 01202 937568.
When you arrive for your first visit, I will meet you at the door personally. You only ever see me, as I am the only chiropractor who works here. I will take you through the waiting area to the consultation room. If you would like to bring a friend, partner or family member, they are entirely welcome, and there is space for them to wait comfortably or to accompany you into the treatment room.

The Initial Consultation and Taking Your Case History
Your first visit can be up to one hour long and begins with a thorough case history. This is the most important part of the appointment: a detailed conversation about your current symptoms, your medical history, any previous injuries or treatments, and an overview of your lifestyle and general health.
As a guide, I will ask about:
- Where the pain or problem is, when it started, and what makes it better or worse
- Your medical history, including any diagnosed conditions, medications and previous surgery
- Your work, daily activity levels and posture habits
- Your sleep, exercise and any relevant lifestyle factors
I will explain things clearly throughout this conversation. By the end of the case history, you should already have a clearer sense of what might be causing your problem and how chiropractic could help. Talking things through and asking the right questions is a hugely important part of the process.

The Physical Examination and Assessment
Following the case history, a physical and orthopaedic examination takes place. This involves an assessment of your posture and range of movement, orthopaedic and neurological tests relevant to you, and a hands-on evaluation of the spine and affected areas.
There is a screened changing area in the treatment room where a gown is offered if needed. A lot of the time there is no need to change at all, and treatment can take place fully clothed.

If imaging would help the assessment at this early stage, an X-ray or MRI scan can be arranged. I can refer you for this either through your GP or through an external provider.
What to Wear to Your First Chiropractic Appointment
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. Jeans and restrictive waistbands are best avoided where possible. Sports or casual clothing, such as joggers, leggings and a loose top, works well because it makes movement assessment easier.

The gown fastens at the back and is available if you prefer it, though most patients are treated fully clothed
As shown above, a gown is always available if you are more comfortable using one. It fastens at the back, and you will not be asked to remove underwear. Many patients are treated without changing at all and stay fully dressed.
Not sure if chiropractic is right for you? Come and find out
You do not have to commit to a full appointment to get started. A free 15-minute consultation is a relaxed way to meet me, ask your questions and decide whether chiropractic is the right next step, with no charge and no pressure.
Does Treatment Begin at the First Appointment?
In most cases, yes. Once the case history and examination are complete, and provided there are no red flags or contraindications that require further investigation, treatment typically begins that day. There is no need to come back on a separate occasion for treatment to start.
Treatment with me at Bournemouth Chiropractic may include some or all of the following, depending on your symptoms:
- Spinal manipulation or adjustment: precise, controlled movements applied to specific joints to restore movement and reduce pain
- Mobilisation: gentler, repetitive movements to improve joint range and reduce stiffness
- Soft tissue work: targeted massage and release techniques for the muscles and ligaments around the affected joints
- Postural and ergonomic assessment: identifying the daily habits contributing to your problem

The majority of patients who visit me for the first time are dealing with back pain, neck pain or headaches. These are the conditions I see most often. Our comprehensive guide to low back pain gives a good sense of how I approach assessment and treatment for the most common complaint, and our neck pain, headaches and migraines hub covers that whole cluster. For headaches specifically, our post on how to get rid of a headache naturally explains the chiropractic approach in detail.
What Happens After Your First Appointment
At the end of your first visit, you will leave with:
- A clear explanation of what I found and what I believe is causing your problem
- A proposed treatment plan, including the approximate number and frequency of sessions likely to be needed
- A transparent breakdown of costs and treatment rates, and a realistic guide to how long recovery might take
- Lifestyle advice specific to your condition: how to sit, how to sleep, which movements to try and which to avoid, and whether to use heat or ice between sessions
- A tailored home exercise programme where appropriate
Progress is reviewed regularly throughout your course of treatment, and I adjust the plan based on how you are responding as we go.
If chiropractic treatment is not appropriate for your particular condition, I will tell you clearly and refer you back to your GP or to a specialist. I never treat conditions I cannot responsibly help.
Frequently Asked Questions About Your First Chiropractic Visit
Do I need a GP referral to see a chiropractor?
No. Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners, which means you can book directly without a referral from your GP. This is one of the real advantages of chiropractic care: you can access assessment and treatment quickly, without navigating a referral or waiting a long time for an appointment. Most new patients at Bournemouth Chiropractic are seen within 48 hours of getting in touch.
Will I be treated at my first visit, or is it just a consultation?
In most cases, treatment begins at the first appointment, immediately following the case history and examination. The first visit is longer than regular appointments because it allows time for a thorough assessment and an initial treatment within the same session. If imaging or further investigation is needed before treatment, I will explain this clearly.
Is chiropractic treatment painful?
Most patients find treatment comfortable, and many notice an early improvement in their symptoms. Some mild soreness afterwards is quite normal, similar to the feeling after unaccustomed exercise, and it typically settles within 24 to 48 hours. I always work within your pain tolerance and adapt my approach based on your feedback.
How long will my treatment take overall?
This varies considerably depending on your condition and how long you have had the problem. Some patients with acute presentations improve significantly within three to six sessions as a guide. More complex or long-standing conditions may need a longer course of care. At your first appointment I will give you a clear and honest estimate for your specific situation, including a sense of what improvement should look like at each stage.
What conditions do you treat at Bournemouth Chiropractic?
The most common conditions I see include back pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, shoulder and arm pain, hip and pelvic pain, leg and foot pain, sporting and dance injuries, and maintaining mobility. If you are unsure whether your particular problem falls within the range of conditions chiropractic can help, the free 15-minute consultation is a good place to start. Just ask.
What if chiropractic is not right for me?
I will tell you clearly and promptly if I cannot help with your condition, and I will refer you appropriately back to your GP or to a specialist. I never treat conditions I do not believe I can improve. Patient safety and honest communication come before anything else.
